231st Marine Corps Birthday Ball

The Marine Security Guard Detachment at the embassy held their annual ball this past Saturday at the Hotel Bellevue Palace. It was our first ball. We had such a great time. (I even learned how to tie a bow tie since Aaron couldn't do it himself.)

It was hard to get pictures of my dinner, but I was determined. I had to turn off the flash so as not to disturb the rest of my table. What a great meal - and free drinks all night! (Those were the strongest gin and tonics I'd ever had.) Ooh, the best part - two desserts!

Appetizer Platter with Smoked Salmon, Bündner Fleisch, and Shrimp Salad

Prime Rib of Beef, Baked Potato with Sour Cream and Chives, and Assorted Autumn Vegtables

Tarte Tatin with Vanilla Ice Cream

Meine Doppelgängerin

There's a bakery about a block away from the embassy that comes in every morning and sets up a table in the lobby. It's usually a woman with an older man who helps her carry the food and drinks into the building. The public affairs office, my office, keeps their table and cart of utensils and napkins when they're not there. It's more convenient since our office is right in front of where they set up.

I happened to be walking by them on yesterday morning after a trip to the mail room in the basement. The older man turns to me, smiles, and says excitedly in German, "I thought that was you!" I thought I had misunderstood, but no, he definitely said those words...

...as he pointed to a picture of Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice behind me on the wall, below pictures of the President and Vice President.

I was so surprised that I just laughed and said no. I cracked up laughing as soon as I got back to my desk. If you're reading this, go find a picture of her online right now. Wait, I'll even make it easy for you and give you one here.

I don't see the resemblance, do you?
